Instead of asking me what I do – ask me WHY.
The dreaded question of, “So, what do you do?” at networking events, always leaves me frustrated. What I really want to know is “How may I help you?”
At a recent networking event, I was asked that question and tried to explain what I do, and HOW I do it. The woman started backing away from me and said, “Okay, now you’re scaring me!”
Quickly I replied, “Then ask me WHY I do what I do!” She stepped closer to me and said, “Okay, I’ll bite, WHY do you do what you do?”
As I told her why, her eyes swelled with tears and she said, “Now I understand, and I’m inspired beyond words.”
Since people need categories and reference points, my first instinct is to list what I do. I LOVE doing what I do. I love building websites, creating desktop publishing, drawing cartoons, illustrating, and graphic recording. I love writing and speaking, teaching and facilitating. These are things I do well – and I have many clients who rave about working with me.
Here’s about HOW I do what I do:
- Cartoons, Illustrations, and Graphic Recording: Artistically illustrating your message, story, or concept speaks louder than words. Coupled with your words, comprehension, retention, and recall is enhanced as much as 65%!
- Coaching: Coaching is available on its own, or in tandem with my creative services. It is something I constantly find myself doing with clients and have found that the missing ingredient with many entrepreneurs is identifying core values and matching those values with their business, to their life. Sometimes a great business idea may become a nightmare for your real life world. Because of seeing client after client struggle with this balance, I decided to invest in an education with the Christian Coach Institute to learn the valuable skill set of being a Professional Life Coach.
- Building WordPress websites: your website illustrates to the world, what you do and how you do it, as well as providing the information and connection needed to build your business. Having control over this valuable and necessary asset is a must. WordPress allows you to learn as much as you desire to learn in order to have control.
- Desktop Publishing: Whether it is laying out books, creating one-sheets, newsletters, or brochures, this is another way of illustrating your message, and connecting clients to your services and information.
I utilize the same artistic and intuitive skill sets that create a cartoon or illustration as I do when graphic recording or when I’m coaching clients. When graphic recording, I’m assimilating a great deal of information, listening deeply and picturing the simplified form or metaphor that instantly explains a concept or message.
